Insurance Types & Explanation

Insurance offers peace of mind for unexpected occurrences in daily life. Information on insurance is available in the University Co-op Seikyou kaikan, as well as insurance companies near Sapporo station. Please contact one of these places for more detailed information.

Fire Insurance

Fire Insurance insures your personal belongings in the event lightning fires and storm / flood damage. This insurance is highly recommended in order to protect your belongings.

Tenants Liability Insurance

Tenants Liability Insurance comes into effect in the event fire or water damage occurs in your residence as a result of your negligence. According to law, the renter is obligated to restitute the property owner for damages to the property in such an event. Generally, this type of insurance is coupled with Fire Insurance. If you choose to rent an apartment, Tenants Liability Insurance coverage is usually mandatory.

Liability Insurance

Liability Insurance covers unexpected accidents occurring as a result of injury to others or damage to their property. When renting an apartment, Liability Insurance is necessary.

Automobile Insurance・Bicycle Insurance

Automobile Insurance or Bicycle Insurance is used either to cover expenses toward the other driver when an accident occurs through your negligence, or to cover your own losses when you are involved in an accident caused by another party. Coverage varies depending on the policy, so it is important that you carefully review the content at time of contract. If you own and operate an automobile, you are required by law to insure it. You are required to insure your vehicles with mandatory vehicle liability insurance. However, this insurance does not provide full coverage in the case of an accident. We strongly recommended you purchase additional, optional car insurance such as property damage liability insurance and injury liability insurance.

Life Insurance

Life Insurance is a contract between a policy owner and an insurance company whereby the insurance company promises to pay money to the designated beneficiary upon the death of the insured person. In case of a serious illness or an accident, we strongly recommend you obtain life insurance.

*The Hokkaido University Co-op offers Student Mutual Benefits (Kyosai) which covers fire insurance and life insurance (liability insurance coverage is offered as an optional coverage).

Some Hu’s international students cause or involved in a bicycle accident or water leak accident every year, which leads to be required to pay compensation. To avoid it, be sure to get adequate insurances and keep them.
