Electricity, Gas and Water

When you move to a new residence, you need to notify the electric power company, gas agency, and water department to start using these utility services.

Electricity

The standard voltage in Hokkaido is 100V and the standard cycle frequency is 50Hz.
When you begin to use the electricity, fill out the application card hanging from the circuit breakers and mail it by post. You can also apply via phone, fax, or the Internet.

Gas

Two types of gas are used in Sapporo: city gas provided through underground pipes, and LP gas (liquefied petroleum/propane gas) directly provided from compressed gas cylinders.
Please be sure to confirm what type of gas with your landlord or a real estate company.

City Gas (Kita Gas)

Call the Kita Gas Customer Center at least three days prior to your move-in date and tell them your name, new address, phone number, gas equipment to be used, payment method, and the day you will need to start using gas in order to make the appointment of visit. A service representative will visit the residence on the appointed date and open the main valve.

LP gas (propane gas)

LP gas (propane gas) is provided by many companies. If you live in a residence where propane gas is used, please contact the relevant company after asking your landlord or a real estate company for the relevant name and phone number.

Water

Tap water in Japan is drinkable as is. To start using the water, please contact the Sapporo City Waterworks Bureau. You can apply via phone call, fax, or internet.
