Extension of Period of Stay
In the event you want to stay in Japan beyond your authorized period of stay, you are required to apply for permission to extend your period of stay at your local Immigration Bureau.
Required Documents:
- Application Form for Extension of Period of Stay (the university will fill out part of this form)
- Photograph (Please refer to here for the size)
- List of documents to be submitted
- Confirmation documents depending on requirements
- Certificate of University Registration
- a）If you are a research student, a document certifying the nature of your research and a course duration is required.
- b）For special audit students, a document certifying your subjects and number of lessons is required.
- Transcript
- Certificate of attendance (if available), transcript and graduation certificate (certificates related to all educational institutions attended since the most recent application for residence) *This includes cases such as moving from an undergraduate to a master’s degree or from a master’s degree to a doctoral degree.
- Passport
- Residence Card
- Permission to engage in remunerative activities
- National Health Insurance Certificate of qualification or notification of qualification information
- When a permission is received, ¥6,000 fee (Purchase a revenue stamp at your local Immigration Bureau and put it on the form prior to submission)
*(In case you go to a different school), submit certificate of graduation, completion or withdrawal, as well as certificate of academic record, (if attendance is taken) certificate of attendance.
*Japanese translations must be attached where documents are written in foreign languages.

when applying. - You must apply before your visa expires. Applications are accepted from three months before your visa is set to expire.
- You must apply in person
- If you are a transfered student from other schools, you are required to submit the “Notification of the accepting organization” forms (2 types ‘left’ and ‘transfer’) to the local Immigration Bureau within 14 days of the events occur.
